Founded in 2012, GHP Law was created to provide clear and practical advice to business clients, backed by strong experience of the commercial legal sphere.

As lawyers, we pride ourselves on our deep and detailed knowledge of the legal worlds we operate in. As people, we’re proud of being approachable and straight up. Combining the two means our clients always know where they stand.

The law is ever-changing. It’s not enough to perform the same kind of legal work over and over again. Understanding this – and serving our clients best – means responding to change with new ideas and new ways of working. That’s why we’re dedicated to being open with our clients, to keeping them abreast of legal realities, and bring their business ambitions to life.

Whether we are solving property problems, advising clients on joint ventures or RMA issues, our approach is the same – cutting through the complexity, and finding the best possible way forward, every single time.

Dunedin has always been my home, growing up here and graduating from the University of Otago in 2004.

After practising locally for many years, I made the decision to establish a new firm in 2012. I wanted a practice that reflected my own values, a firm where I could take real ownership of my clients' legal needs.

We have certainly grown since we opened but have stayed true to those original values.

Along with a great team of staff we have a firm that's focused squarely on our clients and their legal issues. We're there for them. I believe that this kind of commitment breeds real trust, and that's the difference.

Our clients know that our door is open, and we'll find the answer.

Rob Pile - Director

After graduating from the University of Otago in 2013, I was admitted to the bar and began my career in Christchurch. The post-earthquake environment in Christchurch at that time was fertile legal ground and provided me with the perfect platform to gain valuable experience on a wide range of private client and commercial matters.

In 2016 I relocated home to Dunedin to build on my existing network of relationships formed during my secondary school and university years.
Since returning to Dunedin, I have seen a need for accessible, local lawyers who provide practical, clear advice that clients understand. That is why I am pleased to join GHP Law, a firm known for delivering quality results and not sugar coating their approach.

Sam, Henry and I work closely together and advise on a wide range of legal matters. In particular, I have a special interest in commercial, rural and residential property matters, as well as asset protection / planning.

Henry Hambleton - Director

Henry HambletonLL.B / BCom

Having grown up on the Taieri Plains, I graduated from the University of Otago with a law and commerce degree in 2010.

The next 9 years were spent working in another commercial law firm in Dunedin. These years involved advising on a broad range of commercial transactions such as the sale and purchase of commercial, rural and residential properties, commercial and rural leases, the acquisition and sale of businesses and capital raises. Other advisory work included advising on commercial contracts such as manufacturing agreements and advising on asset structuring (i.e. shareholders’ agreements and Trusts etc).

Having worked with Sam previously and then having seen his firm grow and develop, the decision to join him at the firm in 2020 was easily made. I now look forward to working with Sam and the rest of the team at GHP Law and providing pragmatic commercial legal advice to our clients.

Marina Conway - Lawyer

Marina ConwayLL.B

Born and raised on a farm in the Deep South, I graduated from the University of Otago in 2007, returning home to join the rural team at a local firm.

In 2009, I shifted to Dunedin and became a Barrister, specialising in family litigation. I was fortunate to gain exposure to some high-level cases during this time and learnt a lot about effective advocacy, and the importance of excellent legal drafting.

After a small break, while my children were young, I spent 5 years as a legal manager for a software start-up based in Dunedin. During this time, I gained valuable insight into the day-to-day running of the business as it scaled from a small business to an international operation.

In 2019, I joined the team at Guest Hambleton. I now work closely with Sam to offer legal advice on a broad range of commercial and property matters. I am a passionate advocate for my clients and have a particular interest in succession planning and relationship property matters.

Outside of the office, you will find me exploring the beautiful south coast with my family.

Alistair Paterson -

Alistair PatersonLL.B, Commissioner for Oaths (Aust)

Dunedin born and bred, educated at Otago Boys, I graduated Otago University and was admitted to the High Court in 1974. While attending University I was employed by Trustees Executors and that lead to developing an interest in estate and trust law. Later in partnership with Jack Lemon and Graham Duff undertaking conveyancing, commercial and Local Authority law (Otago Harbour Board) as well as general practice.

For the last 40+ years as a sole practitioner specialising in conveyancing, estate, commercial and trust law, I have seen a lot of law.

I have always enjoyed the personal inter relationships with clients and have noticed latterly I was acting for a number of the second generation of my original clients. I am now semi retired and I am keen to ensure my clients continue to receive the standard of care I strove for during practise.

I consider that I have always provided effective and timely legal services and now with a group of extremely competent and capable younger lawyers at GHP Law I am anxious for my clients to receive effective, proactive and timely results.

I will be pleased to discuss your ongoing representation and act as a conduit for introductions to the new firm.

Lawson Davison - Lawyer

Lawson DavisonLLB

Originally from Wellington, I moved to Dunedin in 2014 to pursue a career in law through the University of Otago. I quickly became attached to the city and its people and my decision to stay and develop my practice in Dunedin was easily made.

Following four years at a general practice firm in Dunedin, developing skills and gaining experience on a broad range of legal issues, I realised my interests lay squarely in the commercial and property spheres.

The decision to move to GHP Law in August 2021 was also an easy one to make; the firm’s commitment to its clients and its pragmatic and progressive approach lead to consistently favourable results.

I work closely with Sam, Henry and Rob on a broad range of legal matters. In particular, I am interested in commercial and property related transactions and dispute resolution, and assisting clients with their asset protection/planning.
